Vinyl Music Compilations
I celebrate every year The Lovecraft is open by putting out a compilation of bands that have played the bar. I was originally inspired by The Batcave, L'Amour and CBGB’s because of their comps; it was a brilliant testament to the talent that had graced their stages. Of course, like dating, I have rules. So, if you’re a band and want a chance to be on these comps, maybe you should pay attention.
1 - Never ask me to be on the comp. That’s like asking me to buy you a drink. It is something offered, not fished for.
2 - It helps if I have actually heard you perform live before I invite you on board, and, I do travel a lot, and I like to sleep a lot, so no, I don’t see every band. But if my friends liked you and you were well behaved….
3 - Behavior. You could be as awesome as Coil but if you piss me off or my staff (friends) I am not investing over $2k into your band. Examples of causes of past rejections - extreme lying, insulting to crowd, implying crowd should leave early, rudeness/rock-star attitude, public criticism/drama of bar or our friends. (basically, stay off Facebook if you’re drunk and feeling stupid), unprofessional recordings, abuse or disregard of city imposed curfew, or, your song simply sucks. If you see your band as art or a business, and Lovecraft Bar as a promoter or an investor, work with us, not against us.
4 - If I invite you to be included and you are super flaky getting me tracks or band info I may un-invite you. Working with bands is like herding cats, don’t make me work to help promote you. And I don’t care if you think I’m a dick.
Though I do charge $15 for these comps, I never actually profit. Many are given out as gifts or promos. Some have had radio play, some end up in the hands of famous and/or connected people. I do it for the music, not the money. I saw one on Ebay for $100 (no one bought it, and why would they?). Also, I get to play your songs when I dj because I prefer djing with vinyl. Some people have actually bought turntables because I gave them a record to motivate them.
I give each band member 2-3 copies of the comp. If you want more to sell, I will sell them to you at cost. I only print 250 copies, and reissues may or may not happen. I like progress.
I love positive, creative musicians. That’s why I do this. And I know when you’re a poser or a dick who just wants attention. It’s not how many people show up to see you perform live, it’s how hard you rock for those who care.
